Premature neonates in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) face frequent exposure to noxious stimuli, leading to acute, prolonged, or chronic pain. Despite its impact, prolonged pain remains poorly defined and managed due to inconsistent terminology in the literature. This concept analysis seeks to establish a clear theoretical definition of prolonged pain in premature neonates. Using Smith and Mörelius’ [1] principle-based methodology, 73 articles were systematically reviewed across eleven multidisciplinary health databases. Deductive analysis based on Anand’s[2] theoretical pain framework, combined with inductive analysis of pragmatic, linguistic, and logical principles, identified key elements to define prolonged pain. This definition will improve the identification, evaluation, and treatment of prolonged pain in hospitalized premature infants while enhancing both the scientific and clinical understanding of their pain experiences.
